Australian cockroaches are large, reddish-brown cockroaches similar in size to American cockroaches but distinguished by prominent yellow margins on the thorax and yellow streaks at the base of the forewings. Despite their name, they originated in Africa. They are primarily an outdoor and greenhouse pest in the southern United States, particularly in Florida, where they are common in landscape plantings, greenhouses, and around building perimeters. They are capable fliers and are attracted to lights at night.
