Clothes Moths

Clothes moths are small, golden-tan moths whose larvae feed on wool, silk, fur, feathers, and other animal-based textiles. The webbing clothes moth and casemaking clothes moth are the two most common species. Unlike pantry moths, clothes moth adults avoid light and are typically found in dark closets and storage areas. Larvae produce silk webbing (webbing moth) or portable silk cases (casemaking moth) and can cause significant damage to valued garments, rugs, and textiles. They are becoming more common as natural fiber clothing regains popularity.

Key Behaviors

Clothes moth adults avoid light and are poor fliers, fluttering rather than flying purposefully. They are found in dark closets, garment bags, and storage areas rather than near lights. Larvae feed on soiled or stained wool and silk preferentially, as they require the keratin protein in animal fibers. Infestations often go unnoticed until clothing is removed from storage and damage is discovered. Central heating allows year-round activity in modern homes.

Risks & Concerns

Clothes moths damage wool, silk, cashmere, fur, and feather-based garments, rugs, and textiles. Damage is often discovered only when items are removed from seasonal storage. Heirloom and antique textiles, Persian rugs, and fur garments are particularly at risk. Dry cleaning or laundering garments before storage removes food stains and body oils that attract larvae. Cedar and moth balls provide limited protection in well-sealed containers.
