Key Behaviors
Primarily nocturnal. Fells trees by gnawing through the trunk with powerful incisors - can fell a 15-cm-diameter tree in under 30 minutes. Builds dams to create deep-water ponds, and lodges within those ponds for shelter. Family units of 4-8 individuals maintain dam and lodge year-round.
Risks & Concerns
Dams flood roads, septic drain fields, foundations, and agricultural land. Burrows undermine pond dams and embankments. Floods timber stands and crop fields. Fells valuable fruit, nut, and ornamental trees.
