Nutria

Nutria are large, invasive, semi-aquatic rodents originally from South America that cause devastating damage to wetland ecosystems, levees, and agricultural areas in the Gulf Coast states and beyond. Their voracious feeding destroys marsh vegetation, causing erosion and habitat loss. Burrowing into levees and embankments compromises flood protection infrastructure.

Key Behaviors

Primarily nocturnal. Semi-aquatic - spends much of its time in water. Consumes up to 25% of its body weight in vegetation daily, feeding on roots and rhizomes that kills plants rather than just grazing the tops. Prolific breeder - females can produce 2-3 litters of 4-7 young per year.

Risks & Concerns

Burrows into levees, dam embankments, and retention pond walls, compromising structural integrity and flood protection. Destroys sugarcane, rice, and other crops. Damages golf courses and landscaped retention ponds.
