Field Ants
Field ants are a diverse group of medium to large ants that build conspicuous soil mounds in lawns, meadows, parks, and along sidewalks and driveways. Several species are common across the United States, and they are frequently confused with carpenter ants due to their similar size. Mounds can grow to 12 inches or more in height and persist for years, killing grass and creating unsightly bare patches. Field ants rarely enter structures but are common nuisance pests in yards, playgrounds, and landscape beds.

Key Behaviors
Field ants tend aphids on plant roots and stems for honeydew and also prey on insects and scavenge dead invertebrates. They build mounds in sunny areas and are most active during warm weather. When mounds are disturbed, workers swarm out aggressively and can deliver painful bites and spray formic acid into the wound.
