Harvester Ants
Harvester ants are large, ground-nesting ants found primarily in arid and semi-arid regions of the western and southern United States. They build distinctive, large clearing mounds surrounded by bare soil with all vegetation removed in a circle around the nest entrance. Several species are common, including the red harvester ant made famous as the standard ant farm species. Colonies may persist for decades with a single queen. Their powerful stings and venom make them one of the most medically significant ant groups in North America.

Key Behaviors
Harvester ants collect seeds as their primary food source, creating well-worn foraging trails radiating outward from the mound for distances of 30 feet or more. They clear vegetation in a circular zone around the nest entrance. Workers are active during the warmest parts of the day and can strip grass and garden plants within their foraging range.

Harvester ant stings are extremely painful and produce localized swelling, with venom that is among the most toxic of any insect. Allergic reactions can be severe.
