Leaf-Cutter Ants
Leaf-cutter ants are large, conspicuous ants found in Texas and Louisiana that strip foliage from trees, shrubs, and garden plants to cultivate underground fungus gardens. The Texas leaf-cutter ant is the only species found in the United States and builds enormous underground nest systems that can extend 15 to 20 feet deep with hundreds of chambers. A mature colony may contain several million workers. Their rapid defoliation of landscape plants, fruit trees, and gardens makes them a significant pest in areas where they occur.

Key Behaviors
Leaf-cutter workers cut crescent-shaped pieces from leaves and carry them along well-defined trails back to the nest. The leaf material is chewed into a pulp that serves as substrate for their cultivated fungus, which is the colony's sole food source. Foraging trails can extend hundreds of feet and may be heavily traveled with thousands of workers at any time.
