Little Black Ants
Little black ants are small, shiny, jet-black ants that are among the most common pest ants in the eastern and central United States. Colonies are moderately sized with multiple queens and typically several thousand workers. They nest in soil, under rocks, in rotting logs, and in wall voids and masonry. Their small size and generalist nesting habits make them a frequent invader of homes, restaurants, and offices. They are often seen trailing along foundation edges, sidewalks, and countertops.

Little black ants are highly opportunistic foragers that feed on sweets, grease, meats, and other insects. They form well-defined foraging trails and are most active on warm, humid days. Swarming flights of winged reproductives occur from June through August, often emerging from cracks in pavement and building foundations.
