Odorous House Ants
Odorous house ants are one of the most common household-invading ant species in the United States. They earn their name from the rotten coconut-like smell produced when crushed. Colonies range from a few hundred to over 100,000 workers with multiple queens. They nest in a wide variety of locations including wall voids, under flooring, in potted plants, and beneath mulch and stones. Their small size and willingness to nest indoors make them a persistent nuisance in kitchens and bathrooms.

Odorous house ants form long, winding trails to food sources, particularly sweet liquids like honeydew, juice spills, and pet food. They are highly adaptable and will relocate colonies quickly when disturbed. Colonies frequently bud, splitting into multiple sub-colonies that make elimination challenging.
