Bat Bugs

Bat bugs are blood-feeding parasites closely related to bed bugs that are primarily associated with bat colonies in attics, wall voids, and chimneys. When bats are excluded from a building or migrate seasonally, bat bugs lose their primary host and may move into living spaces seeking alternative blood meals from humans. They are nearly identical to bed bugs in appearance and can only be reliably distinguished under magnification by the length of fringe hairs on the pronotum. Bat bug infestations are commonly misdiagnosed as bed bug infestations.

Key Behaviors

Bat bugs live in bat roosting areas and feed on bat blood. When bats are removed or excluded, starving bat bugs migrate through wall voids, ceiling gaps, and light fixtures into living spaces. They will bite humans but cannot sustain populations on human blood alone. Infestations are always associated with current or former bat roosts in the structure. They do not establish in beds and furnishings unless a bat colony is actively present nearby.

Risks & Concerns

Bat bug bites produce itchy welts similar to bed bug bites. The primary risk is misdiagnosis as a bed bug infestation, which leads to expensive, repeated bed bug treatments that fail because the bat colony source is not addressed. Proper identification and bat exclusion are essential for resolution. Bat exclusion should be performed outside of maternity season to comply with wildlife regulations.
