Swallow Bugs
Swallow bugs are blood-feeding parasites that infest the nests of cliff swallows, barn swallows, and purple martins. They are closely related to bed bugs and are similar in size and shape but are covered in fine hair, giving them a grayish appearance. When swallows depart in fall, swallow bugs can invade adjacent living spaces through gaps around windows, vents, and eaves. Properties with swallow nests on the exterior frequently experience swallow bug intrusions after the birds migrate. They are most common in the western and central United States.

Key Behaviors
Swallow bugs live in bird nests and feed on the blood of nesting swallows and their young. They can survive up to three years without a blood meal, persisting in abandoned nests through multiple seasons. When bird hosts depart, they migrate into nearby structures through small gaps. They will bite humans when their primary hosts are absent. Infestations are always directly associated with swallow nests on or immediately adjacent to the structure.

Swallow bug bites cause itchy welts in humans. Infestations can be persistent because the bugs survive for years in old nests. The association with swallow nests means that properties with active nest sites will experience recurring infestations unless nests are removed during the off-season. Swallows are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so nest removal must occur outside the nesting season.
