Asian Cockroaches
Asian cockroaches are a relatively recent invasive species first identified in Florida in 1986 that has since spread across the Gulf Coast states. They are nearly identical in appearance to German cockroaches but have drastically different behavior - they are primarily outdoor, strong fliers that are attracted to light. They thrive in shaded, mulched, and leaf-littered areas and can reach densities of 100,000 or more per acre in suitable habitat. Their attraction to illuminated screens, televisions, and light fixtures brings them into homes in large numbers on warm evenings.

Key Behaviors
Asian cockroaches are active at dusk and fly readily toward lights, unlike German cockroaches which avoid light and rarely fly. They live primarily in mulch, leaf litter, and lawns rather than inside structures. When they enter homes, they congregate on illuminated screens and light-colored walls rather than hiding in cracks. They can interbreed with German cockroaches in laboratory settings.
Risks & Concerns
Asian cockroaches are primarily a nuisance due to their large outdoor populations and attraction to indoor lighting. They can contaminate food and surfaces when they enter homes in numbers. Their near-identical appearance to German cockroaches causes frequent misidentification and misapplied treatments. Outdoor populations are extremely difficult to control due to the vast areas they inhabit.
Identification Tip
Virtually identical to German cockroaches in appearance but distinguished by behavior: Asian cockroaches fly readily, are attracted to light, and live primarily outdoors. German cockroaches avoid light, rarely fly, and are strictly indoor pests. This behavioral difference requires completely different management strategies.
