German Cockroaches
German cockroaches are the most common and economically significant cockroach pest worldwide. They are small, light brown cockroaches with two distinctive dark parallel stripes running from behind the head to the base of the wings. A single female can produce 30 to 40 eggs per ootheca and up to eight oothecae in her lifetime, enabling populations to explode from a handful of individuals to thousands within months. They are almost exclusively indoor pests, thriving in kitchens, bathrooms, and any area with warmth, moisture, and food. They are the number-one cockroach pest in restaurants, multifamily housing, and food processing facilities.

Key Behaviors
German cockroaches are nocturnal and strongly thigmotactic, preferring to hide in cracks and crevices where surfaces touch their bodies on multiple sides. They are commonly found behind refrigerators, under sinks, inside dishwashers, around plumbing penetrations, and in electrical outlets. Fecal spotting - small, dark, pepper-like dots - accumulates around harborage areas.
Risks & Concerns
German cockroaches are mechanical vectors for dozens of pathogens including Salmonella, E. coli, and parasitic organisms. Their shed skins, fecal matter, and body fragments are potent asthma and allergy triggers, particularly in children. Infestations can contaminate food, trigger health code violations, and significantly impact quality of life in residential settings.
Identification Tip
Distinguished from brown-banded cockroaches by the two dark pronotal stripes and preference for moist environments (brown-banded cockroaches prefer dry, elevated harborage). Unlike American or Oriental cockroaches, German cockroaches are almost never found outdoors and are strongly associated with human structures.
