Oriental Cockroaches
Oriental cockroaches are shiny, dark brown to black cockroaches often called waterbugs due to their strong association with damp, cool environments. Males have shortened wings covering about three-quarters of the abdomen while females have only vestigial wing pads; neither sex can fly. They are slower-moving than other cockroach species and produce a particularly strong, musty odor. They thrive in basements, crawl spaces, floor drains, and around exterior foundations where moisture accumulates. They are a common pest in northern and mid-Atlantic states.
