Lady Beetles
The multicolored Asian lady beetle is an invasive species introduced for agricultural pest control that has become one of the most common fall-invading pests in the United States. Unlike native ladybugs, Asian lady beetles aggressively invade structures in fall in large numbers to overwinter. They are highly variable in color, ranging from pale yellow to deep orange-red, with zero to many black spots. They aggregate on light-colored buildings, particularly on sun-warmed south and west-facing walls, and enter through gaps around windows, doors, and utility penetrations.

Key Behaviors
Asian lady beetles produce an aggregation pheromone that attracts others to the same building year after year. They overwinter in wall voids, attics, and behind siding. On warm days, they emerge into living spaces and congregate at windows. When disturbed, they secrete a yellow, foul-smelling hemolymph from their leg joints that stains surfaces. They can also bite with a noticeable but not medically significant pinch.
