Brown Recluse Spiders
Brown recluse spiders are medically significant spiders found primarily in the south-central United States. They are identified by their uniform tan to dark brown color, violin-shaped marking on the cephalothorax, and six eyes arranged in three pairs rather than the eight eyes typical of most spiders. They are reclusive by nature, hiding in undisturbed areas during the day and hunting at night. Infestations can build to hundreds or thousands of individuals in a single home because they reproduce readily indoors and have few natural predators in human structures.

Key Behaviors
Brown recluse spiders are nocturnal hunters that do not build webs to catch prey. They hide in cardboard boxes, clothing left on floors, behind wall hangings, in seldom-worn shoes, and in cluttered storage areas. They are tolerant of human environments and can go months without food or water. Bites typically occur when spiders are trapped against the skin inside clothing, bedding, or shoes.
Risks & Concerns
Brown recluse venom contains sphingomyelinase D, which can cause necrotic lesions at the bite site that destroy skin and subcutaneous tissue. While most bites are minor, severe cases can produce disfiguring ulcers requiring months to heal and occasionally skin grafts. Systemic reactions, though rare, can include hemolytic anemia. Infestations cause significant psychological distress.
Identification Tip
The violin marking is suggestive but not diagnostic; the six-eye arrangement (three dyads) is the most reliable field character. Many harmless spiders are routinely misidentified as brown recluses outside their native range. They are established only in the south-central U.S. and are extremely rare outside that range despite widespread public fear.
