Hobo Spiders
Hobo spiders are funnel-web building spiders found primarily in the Pacific Northwest. They are medium-sized, brown spiders with herringbone-patterned markings on the abdomen. Once classified as a medically significant species, current research has largely debunked claims of necrotic bite effects, and the CDC no longer lists them as a venomous spider of concern. They build funnel-shaped webs at ground level in dark, sheltered locations and are commonly found in basements, window wells, and along foundation walls.

Key Behaviors
Hobo spiders build funnel-shaped sheet webs with a tubular retreat at ground level. They are poor climbers and are typically found at floor level rather than on walls or ceilings. Males wander in late summer and fall searching for mates, which dramatically increases human encounters during August through October. They are fast runners but have poor eyesight and may run toward rather than away from people when startled.
