Armadillos
Armadillos are armored, burrowing mammals that have expanded their range northward across the southeastern United States over the past century. The nine-banded armadillo is the only species found in the U.S. They are prolific diggers that excavate burrows under foundations, driveways, and sidewalks, and create numerous shallow holes in lawns and garden beds while foraging for insects and grubs. Their digging causes significant landscape and structural damage. They are also the only animal besides humans known to carry the bacterium that causes Hansen's disease (leprosy).

Key Behaviors
Armadillos are primarily nocturnal and crepuscular foragers that root through soil and leaf litter with their strong claws. They dig multiple burrows throughout their home range, with entrance holes typically 7 to 10 inches in diameter. Their digging in lawns creates numerous shallow, cone-shaped depressions. They are poor climbers but powerful diggers that can undermine foundations and sidewalks. They always give birth to identical quadruplets.
Risks & Concerns
Armadillo burrowing undermines foundations, sidewalks, driveways, and retaining walls. Their digging in lawns and gardens causes extensive cosmetic and structural damage to landscaping. They are a natural reservoir for Mycobacterium leprae, which causes leprosy, though human transmission risk is considered low. They are difficult to exclude due to their powerful digging ability. Live trapping is the primary control method.
