Opossums
Opossums are North America's only marsupial and are common suburban wildlife that den under decks, porches, sheds, and in crawl spaces. They are slow-moving, nocturnal omnivores that play dead when threatened. While they have a fearsome hissing display, they are generally docile and rarely aggressive. They are increasingly recognized as beneficial due to their consumption of large quantities of ticks. However, they cause damage when they den in structures, raid garbage and pet food, and die in inaccessible areas.

Key Behaviors
Opossums are nomadic, often using multiple den sites and moving on after a few days. They are opportunistic feeders that consume insects, fruit, garbage, pet food, birdseed, and carrion. They do not dig their own burrows but use existing cavities under structures, in woodpiles, and in dense vegetation. Their famous death-feigning behavior is an involuntary response to extreme stress. They are resistant to rabies due to their low body temperature.
