Ghost Ants

Ghost ants are tiny, distinctively colored ants with dark heads and thoraxes but pale, almost translucent legs and abdomens that make them difficult to see on light surfaces. They are a major indoor pest in Florida, Hawaii, and Texas, and are increasingly found in heated greenhouses and buildings in northern states. Colonies have multiple queens and readily bud to form new satellite nests. They are closely related to odorous house ants and produce a similar coconut-like odor when crushed. Their cryptic coloring and tiny size make them easy to overlook until populations are well established.

Key Behaviors

Ghost ants nest in small spaces including wall voids, potted plant soil, between books, and inside cabinetry. They trail along edges, plumbing lines, and countertops, preferring sweet foods and liquids. Like pharaoh ants, colonies bud readily when disturbed by repellent pesticide applications.

Risks & Concerns

Ghost ants contaminate food and are a persistent nuisance in kitchens and bathrooms. While they do not bite or cause structural damage, their budding colony structure means that improper treatment can rapidly worsen an infestation. In healthcare and food service settings, they can contaminate sterile areas and stored products.

Identification Tip

The two-toned coloring with a dark head and pale gaster is unique among common household ants. Distinguished from pharaoh ants by the stark color contrast and from white-footed ants by their much smaller size. Baiting is the recommended approach; repellent sprays cause colony budding.
