Wood Cockroaches
Wood cockroaches are a group of native North American species that normally live under loose bark, in firewood piles, and in leaf litter in wooded areas. Males are tan to chestnut-brown and are strong fliers, while females are darker and wingless. Unlike pest cockroaches, wood cockroaches do not reproduce indoors and cannot sustain indoor populations. They are frequently brought into homes in firewood and are attracted to exterior lights. Despite being harmless transients, their appearance causes significant alarm and generates many pest control service calls, particularly in wooded, suburban areas.

Key Behaviors
Male wood cockroaches fly to exterior lights on warm evenings and commonly enter homes through gaps around windows and doors. They are active during the day as well as night, unlike most pest cockroach species. They do not aggregate in kitchens or bathrooms and show no preference for human habitation. Populations are highest near wooded edges where leaf litter and dead wood accumulate.
