Mud Daubers
Mud daubers are solitary wasps that build distinctive nests from mud on walls, eaves, ceilings, and other sheltered surfaces. Several species are common including the black and yellow mud dauber, the blue mud dauber, and the organ pipe mud dauber. Unlike social wasps, mud daubers are not aggressive and rarely sting, even when their nests are disturbed. They provision their mud cells with paralyzed spiders, particularly black widows, making them beneficial predators. Their mud nests are the primary nuisance concern, staining and marring exterior surfaces.

Key Behaviors
Female mud daubers construct tubular mud cells, provision each with paralyzed spiders, lay a single egg, and seal the cell. Different species produce different nest architectures, from the organ pipe shapes of Trypoxylon to the lumpy mounds of Sceliphron. Blue mud daubers do not build their own nests but refurbish and reuse old nests of other species. They are solitary and do not defend nests aggressively.
